Ignorant faith…

This is the distillation from part of a conversation a friend and I had today:

Ignorant faith isn’t good, history has shown that. Ignorant faith breeds religious moralists that believe nothing but mythological stories. Science and faith need each other, especially in today’s society.

I think us Christians need to remember this, other wise our arguments from silence will just prove how deaf we are to the living Word that actually spoke into actual creation to actually revel this active God whom we worship.

Praise Habit: Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendour.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Psalm 29 (NRSV)

This Psalm makes me think of the mythologies and fairy tales I loved as a kid… heck, I still love them. There is this sense of awe and wonder at this otherly being (Yahweh) who thunders across the waters, who’s voice shakes, rattles, and roles all of creation. But this mythology is real, and our only response is to stand in His house and cry out at the top of our lungs, “GLORY!”

Praise Habit: Psalm 19

The heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.

In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hidden from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can detect their errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from the insolent;
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 19 (NRSV)

There is such an exaltation of God as his fame is displayed. Not only do we see the Glory of God visibly displayed, but we hear it. It is not words and speech we hear, but rather the voice of the day and the proclamation of the night that echo in all the world.
